Slums

There are an estimated 4 million people currently living in slums in Manila.

Tondo is known as one of the most undeveloped and poorest areas of the Philippines. Many of Manila’s slums are found in Tondo. Tondo has a population of about 407,330 people. Tondo is found in the Northwest portion of Manila. Tondo is the most densely populated district in Manila.


Payatas is a slum based on a dumpsite in Manila. Approximately 80,000 people live at the dump.


San Andres is the second most densely populated areas in Manila. San Andres a massive slum area.

Bagong Silangan is a slum area. Street dwellers from central Manila were moved there from the 1970s onwards. Bagong Silangan means "newborn". This was meant to signify "new hope" for the residents who were originally relocated from slum areas in Tondo. It is now also a slum area.
